"OR" The D70.
Welcome to the world of "white balance." I had the same problem when I first got my D70, and I can’t say I’ve fully resolved it. I’ve done a lot of Photoshop adjusting to remove those incredible but unrealistic tans. I’ve found that adjusting the WB to cooler shades makes better pictures. Check out www.nikonians.org on this subject: there’s a lot of discussion on the site about this.
The Nikon D80 vs. the Nikon D40x…?
Posted by admin | Under Nikon D80 Body Only Sunday May 30, 2010What’s the difference? Please help.
I’m looking for…
-interchangable lenses
-10 MP
-"easy" use, as in no complicated buttons, etc
-good default macro
Also, when a description says "camera body only" for it’s price, that DOES include the default lense, correct?
Whoever gives the best anwsers to all my questions gets my vote~ thankyou!!
You can go to Nikon’s website (nikonusa.com) and compare them. The biggest difference is in the size. The D40x is very small.
Body only means you get no lens at all. Sorry, but you will need to buy one.
I was thinking of buying a Nikon D80…?

Is this a good price for what im getting?
I would rather see you go to B&H Photo – available through a link on Yahoo! Shopping – and search for "Nikon D80" and buy this kit for $1,169.95.
Nikon D80, 10.2 Megapixel, SLR Digital Camera with Nikon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens and Two SanDisk 2GB Ultra II Secure Digital (SD) Cards
You will see the same kit without any memory cards for $50 less on the same page, but $50 is a great price for the cards and you will need at least one anyhow.
We had someone here last week who had purchased from the seller you are viewing and they switched them from a Nikon lens to a Sigma lens when they shipped. I would not trust them.
Besides, the 28-80 is more typical of a lens for a FILM camera than a digital camera. The standard kit lens for the D80 (and many other DSLR’s) is 18-55. This gives the 35 mm equivalent of 27-82.5, which you see is about identical the the lens they are showing in this auction.
You would not be very satisfied with having 28 mm as your widest lens on a D80, as the 35 mm equivalent is 42 mm, which some people consider a "normal" lens on a 35 mm!
If you want to stay under your budget, look a bit down the page and you’ll find a D80 with the usual 18-55 lens for $999.95. You still need to get a decent card for $30-40. If you DO go for this, consider adding the new Nikon 55-200 _VR_ lens for $250. My wife has this and it’s a bargain at the price.
Think carefully before choosing this seller or this kit on eBay. The one lens is an odd size for digital, they switched to another brand on someone else here, and most of the "kit" they have thrown together is next to useless.
I have a Nikon d80 which was a gift from my husband…?
Posted by admin | Under Nikon D80 Review Sunday May 30, 2010He gave it to me last year as a present as he wanted me to go for what I’ve always wanted to do, which was to be a professional photographer. Although I’m working on that goal, (I’m currently working for a professional studio so I’m gues I’m well on my way), I just heard that the new d90 came out, and of course I’ve started to research it. All of the reviews are glowing, and I’m now dying to get one. The problem is this: of course it’s a little pricey, and for me to get one I would probably have to sell my d80 which is in pristine condition as I take care of all my photography equipement analy to a fault. Should I sell it to get more $$ to get the d90? As I ponder this decision, I find that it’s going to be very very hard for me to part with my d80 as it has emotional value for me bc the hubby gave it to me and it was my very first dslr. Or should I just suck it up and sell it and get the d90? I dont care to hear about sony or canons, i’m not going to swith over if I do decide to buy as I already have nikor lenses and stuff. Also I dont think I care much for the D300, as I like the fact that the d80 and d90 have some auto functionsn still. so what should i do?
You are always going to see a camera that seems so much better than the one you have.
There is a semi-humorous review of the D90 in the Sept. 29th issue of Time Magazine. The video doesn’t sound that impressive to me. It said the image sensor heated up after only 5 minutes at high resolutiion. Putting it down to a lower resolution, you could film for 20 minutes, so it sure doesn’t sound like it would be a good substitute for a camcorder. So that sure wouldn’t be a selling point for me.
Since you are only on your way to becoming a pro, what would the D90 do for you that the D80 doesn’t? Do really NEED any added features it might have right now?
I would keep the D80. Continue to learn at the studio and start saving your money. By the time you get ready to go pro, you can then consider a different camera. By then, there may be something a lot better than what you think the D90 is! You could buy whatever you want then, and still keep the D80 as a backup. Most pros have at least two cameras anyway.
The D80 is coming down in price, so I don’t think you would get enough money out of your D80 if you tried to sell it to make up for the sentimental value, and possibly hurting your husband’s feelings.
Good luck to you in making your dream come true!
What is an ideal all-purpose lens for the Nikon D80?
Posted by admin | Under Nikon D80 Lens Sunday May 30, 2010I’m upgrading to a Nikon D80 now and want to purchase 3 lenses to start with: macro, telephoto, and an all-purpose for general shooting.
I’ve decided with the input of friends to go with the Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G ED IF AF-S VR for macro, and I’m splurging and getting the 70-200 f/2.8 VR for a telephoto lens
The telephoto is mainly for dance photography (dark theatres and fast moving people), and the macro for insects/food/flowers/etc.. I’d like a general lens now that will work for leaving on my camera as I walk around the city so I can snap photos without having to change lenses, or something that will work in most conditions.
I’m also into portrait photography, but that may be a fourth stage lens that comes after I’ve experimented with the initial three (and when I can afford one!).
Advice and suggestions are welcome, thanks in advance! ![]()
The 18-200 is very popular.
Another popular choice is one of the lenses in the 17-85mm range. Rationale being, you already have 70-200 covered, why pay for that range all over again in the 18-200?
If you don’t need anything as wide as 17mm, then there are 2 quite good 24-85mm choices. If you do need a lens that goes wider than 24mm, then there is a highly regarded 17-55 mm lens that is a favorite among photojournalists. It is excellent and not cheap.
I have a Nikon D80. Occasionally, when I turn the camera on, take lens cap off, the f stop does not register.
Posted by admin | Under Battery Nikon D80 Sunday May 30, 2010As a result when you push down the button to take a picture, nothing happens. Sometimes when I let the camera sit for a few days and try again it works. However, recently that is not the case. The battery is fully charged. Has anyone else had a similar problem and if so how did you resolve it?
Yep sounds familiar. I don´t know what caused it (our D80 was stolen before I took time to look at it) but here´s the quick fix
* turn the camera off
* push the button to release the lens
* turn it an inch
* click the lens back into the locked position
done.
It was/ is probably dirty contact points for the electronic connection between the lens and the body.
Nikon D80 28-200mm D Lens – Strap/Mount problems?
Posted by admin | Under Nikon D80 Camera Body Sunday May 30, 2010Hi,
I recently brought a Nikon 28-200mm D Lens for my Nikon D80 and i feel it is kinda heavy – Manageable though (550g) I have three questions
1. I am using the Strap which came with my D80 – will the strap handle the weight of the lens and the body without any Issues? (550g lens plus some 600g body)
2. I have the habit of leaving the lens on the camera and store it in my Camera Bag lens pointing down..Will it affect the Camera lens mount due to the weight?
3.Will the Camera have any problems if i hold it the normal way with this heavy lens (on the side of the camera body where we hold to take photos)
Thanks
The Nikon strap can hold that lens, I hang a 200-400 mm lens off mine a lot (3275g)
I always have a lens on my camera in the bag. It makes it ready for me when something happens and I want to capture it (like breaking news). I usually have a 18-200 mm VR lens when it is in my backpack
If the "normal way" means with your left hand holding the lens and right holding the camera with finger on the shutter release, then there should be no problem. For the correct way to hold your camera, look on page 21 of your users manual.
Camera Question!!!! What should I get?
Posted by admin | Under Nikon D80 Accessories Sunday May 30, 2010Hi! I recently bought a Nikon D80 and I do have to say I love it. It currently has a 55-200mm F/4-5.6 VR AFS and 18-55mm VR AFS lenses.
I’m going to Hawaii in May, and I want to get amazing shots. I know they are not the best lenses in the world, but since it is an expensive trip, I can’t buy everything i want for my camera in time for the trip.
I’m planning on buying the following items, but I need to know which would be the most helpful on the trip. My max is $200.
I’m thinking about getting;
1. Polarizer/UV/Colored filters and a spare memory card, and battery… With a few other accessories, such as: hoods, micro fiber cleaning sheet, wrist strap, spare LCD covers, etc.
2. SB400 exterior flash.
3. NIKKOR 50mm F/1.8 lens.
I’m going to get all of these items over-time, but I need to know which would be absolute best for the trip.
If you guys have any other suggestions for me to get, just tell me =] I’m open to anything. Just want to make sure I come back with great pictures for memories.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!
You need a UV/Haze filter for both lenses and a circular polarizer. Fortunately, both lenses use a 52mm diameter filter so that saves having to buy 2 polarizers.
Do NOT waste your money on cheap, no-name filters. Buy quality: Hoya, Heliopan, Tiffen, B+W. Buy the polarizer in a "thin" or "slim" mount to avoid possible vignetting (dark corners on your images) when using the 18mm focal length and buy the UV/Haze filter for the 18-55mm lens in the same mount.
Since you’re shooting digital you really don’t need colored filters. Those are traditionally associated with black & white film. You can replicat any colored filter effect easily in Photoshop.
If you can add a quality tripod then do so. Again, do NOT waste your money on some department store model. Buy quality: Slik, Velbon, Manfrotto, Gittos, Gitzo are well-known brands.
In my opinion you’ll definitely want the lens hood made for each lens.
A wrist strap on a DSLR, in my opinion, is as useful as a trailer hitch on a Ferrari. You need a nice wide neck strap. If you’re going to be doing any climbing or long hiking you might want to check out the camera harness available at http://www.backcountrysolutions.com
If you plan on trying any night photography without flash then you’ll definitely want to add the aforementioned tripod to your kit. You’ll also find the FotoSharp ( http://www.fotosharp.com ) Day & Night Exposure Guide very useful. You might also consider one of their camera "raincoats" just in case you get caught in a sudden shower. I’ve been using the Day & Night Exposure Guide for years and highly recommend it.
