i posted a question kinda about it earlier, but this is a little different (only 3 replies anyways :p) but anyways, so i’ve been into photography for a while, and have been debating on which dslr to get, and i’ve always wanted the nikon d80, but wasn’t sure if i should get it. i was going to go with the d40 because it was cheaper, but they way i’d have the payments worked out with my parents i could afford to get the d80, it’ll just take longer to pay off, but i get it in advance, so i thought why not go better. so anyways, if you have the d80/have used it, how do you like it? and how is it compared to other cameras you’ve used? also another question would be which lens would you recommend? i can get the body for around $780, so which lens do you recommend? they have it with the 18-135mm for about $1060 with s&h (these are from b&h just incase you were wondering) or with the 18-55mm VR lens (which i’m not exactly sure what a VR lens is) for about $965 w/ s&h. but those are just some.
ran out of room haha, but yeah, those were just 2 of them, but which lens would you recommend? i pretty much shoot everything, my main subject is my puppy though. any additional info you want to add is more than welcome, anything is appreciated, thanks in advance!
thanks….i think i’m going to go with the 18-135, just to start out with at least.
and sorry about the repeating question if it bothered you :/
just trying to make a good decision…i think i have
thanks everyone!
more answers are welcome too.
I was in the same situation you are in a while ago: I was looking for a great, affordable semi-pro DSLR and looked at many brands, including Nikon, Canon, Olympus, etc. After a lot of research, I decided to buy the Nikon D80 with the 18-135 mm zoom lens. I chose to buy it over the Canon Rebel XTi and the Olympus E-volt 500. I’ve had it for almost a year and picture quality is great. It feels comfortable in my hand and is just an all-around great camera. I used it for photojournalism and for my photography classes and pictures were crisp and clear. When the D40 came out, I went to go take a look at it and tried it out, but it just didn’t match up to the D80.
Also, not sure if you’re aware, Nikon is introducing the D60, which is somewhere between the D40 and the D80. You might want to check that one out, too. But if you have the money and want a good camera, buy the D80.
As for the lens, I would definitely go with the 18-135 mm lens. The VR (vibration reduction, meant to compensate for camera shake, in other words image blur caused by small, involuntary movements -from wobbly hands, shooting from a moving vehicle, etc.). I’ve gone to many sporting events and used my zoom lens to get a little closer to the action (just don’t sit way too far). You can buy different lenses later, depending on what you want to use them for, but I feel the 18-135 lens is a good, all around utility lens.
Try shopping around for the camera. Sites like www.dpreview.com and www.cnet.com usually have links to online stores and a price next to them. I bought my Nikon at www.buydig.com.

I was originally going for a 40d body ($1200-body only! ouchies). Then I thought nikon d80. ($800-900 body only) THEN I thought XTI. It’s a lot cheaper and good for beginners. But now I think a 30d might be a good idea. It’s been on the market for a few years thus, former beginners are wanting to upgrade and sell.
Anyway, I heard that when you’re not a super pro photographer, megapixels only mean so much. (30d has 8mp vs the usual 10-12+mp of entry level dslrs). I figure I’d try to get a less new camera so I can get a good lens or two or three. I’ve read the xti vs 30d vs 40d vs etc etc stuff so I’m pretty comfortable with the knowledge I have.
The going used price is $600ish via craigslist/good winning bid on ebay.
The going refurbished/open box/etc camera is about $700 or so.
So do you think it’s a good idea to buy a 30d at about those prices? Or maybe you know of where I can get a better deal.
OR, if you have any suggestions at all or comments/wisdom, that’s cool 2
I mean, just because it’s old and not being made any more doesnt mean it’s not good. Right? That’s what I’ve been told anyway.

hey, that is the link to the canon eos 30d, they have " new " ones there, they aren’t used or refurbished.
i would say that the canon eos 30d is a good camera, it has 8 megapixels which is good, it has a big screen which is convinient for displaying your work, it looks and feels more pro, that the canon xti. i would say that the 30d, has much more features, and would be better in the long term
when you buy something off of ebay, be careful some of that crap they sell is so cheap because smtn is wrong with it lol, but i wouldn’t say that in all cases though.
.
hope i helped

Hi I am looking at upgrading to a Nikon, really have no idea on which one to look at getting. HELP! Not only the D40, D600 or maybe the D80, When I am looking at purchasing a camera, what should I look for? They say body only, does that mean I have to purchase a len separately? Which lens should I start out with? Does the others have manual focus? Thank for the input!
This thing about Nikon D40 and D60’s not having autofocus has gone too far. ALL AF-S lenses can be used with any D40 and D60 camera, in fact any older AF-S or AF-I lenses are completely compatible with them.
Okay, that said you can get a D40 with fine 18-55 mm lens for under $450.

If you buy the D40, you will have enough money to buy more memory cards or even a second lens.

I am twelve years old and i am buying my dslr. I am stuck between the nikon d60 and the nikon d80. I have been told to buy the nikon d80 for its 11 point af and others reasons, i would just buy it but…..
1. The kit lens does not include vr
2. It has no dust reduction
3. The body may feel weird in my hands because i am only twelve
all of these factors are found in the nikon d60 but is it still worth it to buy a nikon d80?
We all learned how to hold and use a camera without VR … for decades.. It really only is important when using long lenses hand held.
Dust "reduction" is only necessary if you let dust get into the chamber between the lens and shutter … you can avoid that by only changing lenses in protected areas so the wind will not blow dust into your camera. In the seven years I have been using DSLR’s I have only had to blow dust off the sensor three times … and that was because I changed lenses under windy conditions.
The benefit of the D80, is that it will use many more of the Nikon lens line, both new and used.
The D60 can use over 25 current AF-S lenses and many more good used AF-I and AF-S lenses made since 1992
I have about $800 to work with. I know questions like this are asked very often, but I’m really confused and would appreciate any sort of advice. Nikon is my preferred brand, but if any of you know anything about other brands such as Canon that relates to my situation, that will also be appreciated (but please explain why).
I just started photography about 10 months ago and I’m looking to upgrade from my Fujifilm point-and-shoot. I shoot mostly flowers and such, but I am looking forward to shoot portraits and landscapes when I upgrade. I have never taken a photography and don’t intend to do so anytime soon because the class offered at my school are mostly to learn the basics of photoshop (which I am not interested in… yet)
The only thing holding me back from the D80 is that I am a true beginner so I don’t think I would understand all the features. I like the D70, but I wish it had more megapixels. And I’ve heard more noise is produced from the D60 because of the amount of megapixels they cram into its small body, and it doesn’t fit many old Nikon lenses.
Thanks in advance!
The only issue I see here on Yahoo with the d40 and d60 are people complaining that the body will only focus the DX lenses. That kind of cuts people off because there are a lot of new and used lenses that won’t autofocus on these entry level bodies. You won’t run into that problem with Sony Alpha or Canon.
So if you don’t want to deal with that, you are down to bodies like the d80, d200, d300, d90 etc.
I’d skip the d70, not only because of age but because I’ve seen lots of images from that camera. They are good, but too noisy at high ISO, enough that it might bother you. At the time it probably wasn’t so bad, but all the brands are doing better now.
Also, don’t get too caught up in megapixels unless you plan on doing some aggressive cropping.
The sensor is so much larger on a dSLR versus a point and shoot, and the image processing so much more powerful in a dSLR versus a point and shoot, you can’t compare the two. A 6 megapixel dSLR photo will blow away a 12 megapixel file from a point and shoot every time, even a old dSLR.
Another thing, don’t get caught up in the myth of the ‘beginner’ dSLR. The $600 Nikon is no easier to use than the $3000 one. Sure the more expensive one can do more, but the power button and the shutter button are in the same place, know what I mean?
I’d start with a 50mm f/1.8 prime lens (no zoom) they are cheap, sharp, and great for low light stuff. It’s a good place to start while you cut your teeth on your new dSLR, learn about photography on your own by shooting, and getting free info off the net. It’s also good while you research zoom lenses.
