What type of macro lens do I need for my Nikon D80 (digital)?

Thursday Sep 2, 2010

1. I want close range nature photography.
2. I want a good lens for portrait photography.
I would like a lens (or lenses) that could be used on more than one camera (eg Canon and Nikon), but there is little chance I will ever switch to a film camera.

Good advice on the macro and portrait lens selection the only thing I will add is that there IS an adapter to use Nikon lenses on a canon body there is not one i know of to go the other way due to the flange distance

nikon lenses for portrait photography ?

Monday Aug 23, 2010

i’m a photography student mainly focused on portraiture, fashion, and commercial photography and i am looking to buy a new lens for my nikon D80. i currently have a 18-35mm and an 18-55mm lens. if you could give me some advice as to a lens that would be good for my type of photos and some reasons why that’s be awesome !
thanks !

If are ready to go for third party lenses -

Opt for Sigma 105mm Macro f/2.8 DG EX.
This is very sharp and distortion free. 105mm makes you stand back providing a very pleasing perspective to portraits. f/2.8 is fast enough for most work (it changes when you focus close). Macro capability is an added advantage.
I suggest the above lens since this is the only Sigma lens that outperforms even the Nikkor counterpart.

If money is no object of concern-
Zeiss Planar T* 1.4 / 85mm is a very sharp lens for portraits but you won’t have autofocus capabilities on it.
Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 2/100 is also very good for portraits and provides macro function too. This lens also won’t autofocus and you’ll have to do it manually.

From Nikon -
Nikkor 135mm f/2 DC AF : It’s a sharp lens but with your crop sensor, you’ll ave to stand really away from the subject. This lens also features a very interesting feature called defocus that let’s one create very blurred and soft backgrounds.

Depending on your budget, choose from the models listed above. Remember, good glass will go a long way !

What lenses are best for nikon d80?

Wednesday Jul 28, 2010

What fish eye lenses or lenses do you guys think is best for Nikon d80 that is affordable for individuals that are new to photography?

Edwin has made some very good points. I’m a generalist photographer, shooting a wide range of subjects – personally I find the most useful lens range to be between ultra wide and moderate telephoto. As Edwin says you’d need to choose according to your needs, so if you’re into sports or wildlife you’d be best advised to look at longer lenses.
