Can a Canon 5D MKIII replace my camcorder and SLR?

Thursday Sep 2, 2010

I’ve heard that the 5D MkIII can’t capture action shots as well as a camcorder can so people shouldn’t consider it as a replacement. The sample videos I’ve seen do a decent job with what movement they’ve got captured, and the Nikon D90 sample videos are brilliant. Why shouldn’t I replace both my D80 and my crapcorder with one piece of equipment?

For the price you are better off keeping your D80 and replacing your crapcorder with a Canon HV30; they’re only about $500 bucks now, and shoot HD video that is sometimes better than the Pro camcorders.

It really depends on what you want to use it for. If you’ve noticed the D90 videos have pretty bad audio quality, and they have some problems with high motion / action scenes.

The 5D MK II is very expensive. I’m not sure if the video it shoots is any better quality than that of the D90. If you already have a D80, you could sell that and keep the lenses to use with a new D90.

Help! what is a good first dslr camera for a tech saavy person?

Monday Aug 23, 2010

Hello, I am looking to get my first dslr camera. I am very good with electronics and I can usually figure out things. I am the kind of person who takes a week to read the entire manual book and understand the item inside and out and then use it. I have no experience with DSLR’s but I am sure with a lot of reading I can take full advantage of it’s capabilities.

I have narrowed down the brands to Canon and Nikon. I want it to have an auto mode as well so I can start using it soon and then take care of the manual adjustments later as I learn more. I am looking for a camera with a 3 inch LCD screen at least, and it has to have live view. A sturdy body is also preferred. I also own a macintosh so I would like the software to be compatible with both mac’s and windows. Price isn’t much of an issue, i’m looking to spend anywhere from $600 -$1200. I want something that has a complete kit, not just the body.

Here are some ones i’m looking at, if one of these is best for my circumstances feel free to let me know
Canon 40D
Canon 450D / Rebel XSi
Nikon D90 (the video capture is definitely a plus!)
Nikon D80

Any other suggestions are welcome thanks!
More info on what I want to shoot. I would be interested in shooting macro pictures, fast motion pictures, and spontaneous shots, and of course just normal casual picture taking at the park etc.

You might end up spending all that money and not have much left over for glass…

Both brands are fine. you mentioned the LCD and live view.

Only the 50d and D90 have true high res LCDs, there are so many pixels packed into such a small space… well, your eye can hardly make out the pixels, very smooth.

Live view on Nikon and Canon isn’t the best. If live view is a must have, must work smoothly kind of thing, you want to go Sony Alpha, A300 or A350. If you don’t mind the clunky, slow live view of Canon or Nikon, then scratch Sony off the list.

If you are serious about photography, dump the entry level stuff off the list. The D80 is good, just a tad old. It’s not really old, but dSLR bodies come and go so fast.

So I’ve boiled down the list to the 40d great all around camera with a low res LCD. 50d with a proper LCD but it took a small hit in picture quality (at high ISO) pixel count went up, but sensor size is the same, gapless micro lenses or not.

And finally the D90. I’m taking the D90 if I don’t need killer live view and the tilting LCD of the Alphas. Also, they didn’t go crazy on the pixel count, they kept it at 12MP.

Friday Aug 13, 2010

I prefer still photography but am trying to decide if i should trade my canon vixio hfs10 for a nikon d80. The only thing holding me back is that the canon takes 8mpx as well as hd video. Any suggestions?
